the Middle Ages
for the whole family!

In the heart of the Puisaye region, in the Yonne department of Burgundy, around forty workers
are taking on an extraordinary challenge:
to build a fortified castle today using the techniques and materials employed in the Middle Ages.

It is in the Guédelon Forest, in the heart of a former quarry, that
the workers are building a 13th-century fortified castle every day, right before your eyes. Quarrymen, stonemasons, bricklayers, carpenters, woodcutters, blacksmiths, tile-makers, carters, rope-makers… transform and make the most of the stone, wood and earth found on site to reveal the secrets of the medieval builders.

A bustling construction site in the heart of France

Guédelon is a construction site unlike any other in the world, ideally situated between the A77 and A6 motorways linking Paris to the south of France.

Who hasn’t wondered, whilst visiting a monument, about the construction techniques used by medieval builders? Where did the materials come from? How were they transported? What tools were used? What methods did the builders use to hoist such heavy loads? Every day, Guédelon strives to provide answers to all these questions that remain unanswered.
